Gender Roles

This morning Hannah and Jake were building towers from large Lego blocks. Hannah had run out of pieces and asked Jake if she could use his. He said no. Hannah promptly got the sad, watery-eyed look of a girl about to cry and Jake rushed right over to her side to give her a hug and tell her not to be sad. Guys are such suckers. But Jake made me proud. He stood his ground and didn't give up his pieces but still treated her very nicely and told her not to be sad.

While I was proud to see Hannah start to feel out the powers of feminine persuasion I am glad she learned crying is not the "go-to" way to get what you want. Instead she negotiated with him and now they're happily playing together building an entire city instead of separate towers.
